Visual Supports: People Locators

Like other visual supports, a people locator helps your child anticipate who will be with her during given activities or times.

Days of the Week With Corresponding Individual

For example, when Julie comes home from school her dad is there on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and her mother is there on Fridays. On Thursdays her babysitter, Kristin, is there. A calendar telling Julie who will be at home when she gets there can help reduce her anxiety. It can also be used to show when there is a change.

Another type of people locator can simply show where other family members are.

Family Member's Photo Paired With Their Location

Some children are very aware of other family member's schedules and routines. If your child repeatedly asks where his brother is when he isn't at home according to his normal schedule, this type of visual support might be useful.
