Book Review by Kathy Robinson:

"Taking Care of Myself: A Hygiene, Puberty, and Personal Curriculum for Young People with Autism" by Mary Wrobel

"Taking Care of Myself" is a compilation of social stories for teens and young adults with introductory sections for the adults working with them. Some of the curriculum, such as the hygiene stories could be used with children as young as kindergarten age. The stories cover such topics as hygiene, health, modesty, growth and development, menstruation, touching and personal safety and masturbation. The book opening chapter includes sections on "how to use this book", "addressing communication and language needs", "using the computer with this curriculum", and "getting started with this curriculum". Many of our parent call it their "bible" and don't know what they would do without it. We have several copies available in our lending library, but since it is a popular book you may want to call and see if a copy is available before coming by. "Taking Care of Myself" is published by Future Horizons and be found on their website http://www.fhautism.com. It can also be purchased at Amazon.com new for $16.47, or less for a used one. Of course, the book can also be ordered at your local book store.

A more detailed review of the book by a mother of a ten-year-old boy can be found at http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art34042.asp.
