This presentation will provide an overview of self-determination, its development in adolescents with disabilities, and ways to promote it development and expression. Research-based interventions to teach self-determination skills will be introduced, including the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction. Attendees will develop knowledge of ways to teach self-determination skills, create opportunities for the use of these skills, and plan for supports and accommodations based on individualized support needs.
Educators, Individuals with ASD, and Caregivers
Participants will be able to:
- Define self-determination and identify ways to promote it during the transition from school to adult life.
- Identify ways to teach self-determination skills, create opportunities for the use of these skills, and provide supports and accommodations for the expression of self-determination based on individualized support needs.
- Implement research-based interventions to support the development of self-determination, including the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction.
