Training Description:
This presentation will provide an overview of self-determination, its development in adolescents with disabilities, and ways to promote it development and expression. Research-based interventions to teach self-determination skills will be introduced, including the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction. Attendees will develop knowledge of ways to teach self-determination skills, create opportunities for the use of these skills, and plan for supports and accommodations based on individualized support needs.

Target Audience:
Educators, Individuals with ASD, and Caregivers

Training Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Define self-determination and identify ways to promote it during the transition from school to adult life.
  • Identify ways to teach self-determination skills, create opportunities for the use of these skills, and provide supports and accommodations for the expression of self-determination based on individualized support needs.
  • Implement research-based interventions to support the development of self-determination, including the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction.
